These are though just a small sample of the type of repair or modification we can make. We have a set pricing structure for most common requirements, eg. replacing damaged plugs, but very often we’r able to offer a range of options to address a specific requirement. Customer’s query/request:
I have a pair of Mavros Speaker Cables which I like very, very much. The cables are 5 meters long, banana terminations on the amp side and spades on the speaker side.…
I would like to turn them all bananas terminations but moreover I would like to turn them in two pairs of cables; One pair would be 3 meters long, the other 2 meters long, with, as I said before, all banana terminations.
Do you think you could take care of that?
Our response/solution:
We were able to split one set into two and re-terminate the cables with our solder-free Transpose connectors. If necessary the customer can easily modify these in future by purchasing a set of Spade or Expanding plug adapters.
Restoring tarnished legacy interconnects.
Customer’s query/request:
I hope you can help.
I recently retrieved my Atlas Titan, Elektra and Opus interconnects, which had been carefully stored away for a while.
While the shiny, outer parts of the connectors remain in perfect condition, I was alarmed to see that the RCA Pins and inner Jackets/Collars had become seriously discoloured and rough to the touch (see pictures).
This has happened to every cable.
As you know, these were very expensive interconnects and as they are used to connect a £8,000 Linn streamer I am currently unable to risk using them.
Could you kindly advise me as to what has happened and how to remedy the situation.
Our response/solution:
We were able to re-assure the customer that there was no risk to his equipment, explaining the pins in the plugs are silver-plated – necessary to prevent oxidisation of the base copper, as copper oxide is an insulator (that’s why bare wire terminations are a poor choice in hi-fi systems).
The visible discolouration is silver oxide, which fortunately remains a decent conductor. Plus RCAs are self-cleaning which means when you remove and re-insert the plug it cleans the contact points.
We were able to offer the customer a DIY solution — a simple silver polishing cloth will remove most of it — or if preferred, we could re-terminate the cables with new pins and contacts etc at modest cost.
Customer follow-up:
Thank you for your quick and reassuring response.
I have cleaned the Titan cables and they look like new, looking forward to using them again.
Just noticed you are only based 20 minutes or so down the road from Linn.
Both excellent companies, must be some sort of Glasgow audiophile nirvana.
Many thanks.
Transforming older Mavros interconnects.
Customer’s query/request:
Hi, just looking for info. I currently have the Atlas RCA Mavros (the older version) and I currently have the NACA5 speaker cable. My system is the Luxman D-10x with L509z amp and Focal Sopra 2 speakers, so in your opinion what is the best way to go with speaker cable? I do tend to like the warmer sound and would it be better to upgrade the RCAs? I look forward to your reply.
Our response/solution:
We congratulated the customer on a very fine system, and suggested having us upgrade his Mavros RCAs to the latest Grun-enabled spec would offer substantial benefits in both bandwidth and noise reduction at a modest cost.
His NACA5 was probably the weak link as he suspected; we recommended he audition the matching Mavros Grun Speaker cables at an Atlas dealer, suggesting these should give a more accurate, natural and open sound.
First step the customer took was to return his 2014-vintage Mavros RCA for a factory upgrade to the newer Grun spec version.
Customer follow-up:
Hi Kevin, I got the Grun into my system today and the vocal has air around it, the bass is more tuned, soundstage is more open and I can hear further back — all of this I heard with ease. So very impressive.
To be honest when you hear it there is no going back, I can't wait to get the new Mavros speaker cables into my system, I just need to save for while. I was using Mavros RCA before upgrade since 2014 so I know the cable well, and that's a brilliant service, the upgrading of cables.
One Arran becomes many.
Customer’s query/request:
Hello, could I send you a 5m Atlas Arran XLR signal cable and have it split into five 1m long XLR signal cables? What would the cost be? Thank you.
Our response/solution:
We regularly adapt and re-terminate longer cables into shorter lengths, but typically this is one interconnect becoming two shorter ones, or a speaker cable modified to become cables and jumpers.
Dividing a pair of cable into five shorter sets was a first!
All perfectly do-able, of course, and the ‘donor’ cable was in excellent condition. The only ‘penalty’ being that the actual termination process ‘loses’ about 20mm for each cable, but that seems a small price to pay.
